New York, 1920. Freshly divorced, a single Elsa Schiaparelli finds herself immersed in the upcoming avant-garde Manhattan art scene. The talent of a young and still unknown photographer Man Ray is immediately recognized by the visionary Schiap, asking him to portrait her in his Tribeca studio.

This beginning of their long and prolific relationship is still visible today at “Man Ray et la Mode”, the exhibition at the Luxembourg Museum in Paris.  It features two outstanding Man Ray’s portraits: Elsa wearing a graphic block print beachwear ensemble, and Elsa standing in her first evening dress. These early works capture both the iconic severity of Man Ray’s black and white light, and an early Schiaparelli aesthetic still taking shape.

As their careers evolved, so their collaborative relationship grew. In 1936, sixteen years after first meeting, Man Ray created the symbolic Spiral Glass, a hypnotic piece of face bijoux and a cult object of Maison Schiaparelli.
