Sending the warmest congratulations to my dear friend @エミリー・ハリントン for making history in Yosemite Valley after free-climbing Golden Gate in a day, a notoriously difficult grade VI 5.13 on El Capitan. I first met Em in 2005 in Rifle Canyon CO where I watched her make history as the first female to climb the grade of 5.14 in the legendarily hard area, she was only 15 years old at the time and getting belayed by her father @timnharrington. It was immediately apparent that she wasn’t just an immensely talented climber, but had a heart of gold, a perpetual smile and a deep well of determination. Since that time I’ve been lucky to have traveled around the world with Em and watch her transform into one of the most versatile climbers in the world. These photos here are from some of our experiences, friends @jonglassberg and @jess_talley were in Yosemite to capture her monumental ascent and I cant wait to see it! On Nov 4th, Emily Harrington free climbed Golden Gate, a grade VI 5.13 route on the southwest face of El Capitan, in 21 hours and 13mins. She is the first woman to free climb Golden Gate in a day and the fourth woman to free climb El Capitan in a day. Lynn Hill freed the Nose (VI 5.14a) in a day in 1994. Steph Davis and Mayan Smith Gobat climbed the Freerider (VI 5.13a) in 2004 and in 2011 respectively.
Golden Gate is known as one of the more difficult routes on Yosemite's famous El Capitan. So difficult that only three people, prior have ever free climbed it in a day: Tommy Caldwell, Brad Gobright, and Alex Honnold. Harrington's achievement comes a little less than a year after her first attempt that left her hospitalized. “From being a world champion competition climber to summiting Mt Everest, Emily has always been one of the most versatile climbers out there. By free climbing Golden Gate in a day Em has once again shown that she’s one of the most capable climbers out there”, said Alex Honnold who was her belay partner.
