サザビーズさんのインスタグラム写真 - (サザビーズInstagram)「Ready to strike 🐍 Measuring over three metres in length, this model of an exceptionally long snake was made in Japan in the 19th century and is one of the longest known examples of its type. The art of creating lifelike figures of animals in metal developed during the Edo period. Meticulously constructed with hammered plates of iron by craftsmen who also happened to be the makers of samurai armour, these articulated figures were greatly sought after for decorative use. Placed in alcoves alongside pieces of porcelain, pottery and hanging scrolls, they were objects of entertainment and discussion. With it fearsome glowing gilt eyes, ferocious and sharp moveable teeth, rows of intricately assembled scales, and finely forked tongue, this venomous snake is currently on view in our London galleries, as part of our Fine Japanese Art sale on 3 November.
