“Crazy Train,” the first single off of Ozzy Osbourne’s debut solo album, Blizzard of Ozz, is one of the most recognizable songs in heavy metal. Its raw complexity and use of the full minor scale garner much critical acclaim. Ozzy and former Quiet Riot guitarist Randy Rhoads wrote ‘Crazy Train’ along with bassist Bob Daisley in March of 1980 at Surrey’s Ridge Studios. They added Lee Kerslake later on as the drummer to complete the band.

Daisley came up with the chord pattern and the section for Randy’s guitar skills to solo over. To most, the main recording may sound like there is only one guitar playing, but there is actually one main guitar in the center and two others playing the same notes panned to the left and the right. Randy was top-notch at overdubbing and tracking solos. The riff used effects pedals to produce a heavy chugging sound with a psychedelic twist. This particular sound reminded Daisley of a train going nuts. And that’s how the title of ‘Crazy Train’ came to be about. Contrary to popular belief, the song isn’t really about reaching the brink of insanity—the lyrics are actually about Ozzy’s frustrations with the Cold War.

Though it peaked No. 49 in the UK in 1980, the song’s massive popularity on the Blizzard Of Ozz tour is what catapulted its influence into heavy metal history. It also helped Ozzy’s debut after Black Sabbath sell over one million copies in the two years after its release.

Today, ‘Crazy Train’ is a must-play in any guitarist’s arsenal. Scroll through to find the tools for that heavy metal sound.
