I've been hesitant to share it because once it actually became the future, I started to doubt what I wrote back then, which was largely about hope, which has felt so irrational and potentially disappointing lately. I'm anxious and exhausted and it takes major suspension of disbelief just to function on a daily basis. So I've been like, I wrote a thing about hope? What right do I have to feel hope?⁣ ⁣ When I voted today, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for poll workers and for everyone who's dedicated their time and energy to fighting voter suppression these last few months. In a healthy democracy, it wouldn't take all this effort to make it more possible for people to exercise their right to vote. Voters shouldn't have to wait in long lines or spend hours tracking down their ballots. But turning my attention to these collective efforts made me hopeful, not just about this election, but about seeing this same energy carry over into a Biden/Harris presidency. What might be possible then? I was reminded of the hope I felt when I wrote my letter to the future, and that it was because years of work by Black activists, organizers, and visionaries coalesced in weeks of worldwide Black Lives Matter protests. "What right do I have to feel hope?" Better question: What right do I have to be a cynic?⁣ ⁣ I should be suspicious of my cynicism and who it benefits. Because there's a second daily suspension of disbelief, around my awareness that the first suspension of disbelief is how evil takes hold. The need for normalcy is how fascism and white supremacy gain acceptance. Of course, one needs coping mechanisms to function, stay politically engaged, and take action. But cynicism isn't coping, it's giving up. It's following the script in which daily tantrums and cruelty and breaches of democracy are meant to render us speechless. Really, "What right do you have to feel hope?" is the president talking. ⁣ ⁣ My letter is about all this stuff. Read it in full @ssense. In such good company too. Thank you @durgapolashi for the prompt, and for being an amazing editor and guide.」10月31日 3時18分 - tavitulle
