These few days before the November 3rd US election, I will be sharing moments from various voting events and elections around the world ~ In 1999, I was in East Timor before and after the independence vote. Tens of thousands of East Timorese hid in the forest, fearing for their lives, in the days before voting. I met countless people keeping warm by small fires, camping overnight in the woods, afraid to be in their homes. The next day, on August 30, people waited for hours in lines stretching down the surrounding hills in the capital, Dili. This man, so determined, waited like many more behind armed Indonesian soldiers, just to have the freedom to vote…98.6 percent of East Timorese voted that day in 1999. My dear friends in the United States, the outcome of this year's US elections is crucial, not only for this country but also for our entire global society. This Tuesday, vote as if your life depends on it... if this man can have the courage to vote, to my friends in the United States, this November 3, you have no excuse — vote.
