Born in Germany in the 1960s, Tilmans spent the early portion of his career in London, documenting the youth, clubs, and LGBTQ culture of the 1990s in his raw and confronting style. In the years since, Tilmans has become one of the world’s most influential artists, creating a diverse body of which which includes remarkable diaristic photography, large-scale abstracted pieces, and countless magazine commissions, all to acclaim few image-makers can rival (Tilmans was the first non-British artist to win the Turner Prize in 2000.)
