"The first ‘cash register’ we ever had was actually not a cash register at all but a cigarette box with an art deco pattern on the top. When we sold something, we’d write it down and put the cash in the box. When we started to make our own clothes, they had a label with PAUL SMITH printed on a piece of tape – very basic. But I didn’t think it looked good enough, so I had the idea of using the art deco design from the top of the cash box, with my name in a modern font from the Letraset range, in a burgundy colour. So I had that printed, and it was the first real Paul Smith label."
