Women represent just 31% of US elected officials across local, state, and federal offices. For women of color, that number is an abysmal 4%. The numbers aren’t all bad, though: women candidates win more often than men candidates, and women of color tend to win even more than white women. If women win, why are political parties so reticent to put women candidates on the ballot?⠀
⠀
#WomenWin elections more than men at multiple levels of office. The numbers you see in slide 2 show averages that account for how many women ran in both parties. When looking at Democrats alone, women’s win rates are even higher. Women out-win men in statewide elected executive positions races, too (think treasurers, attorney generals, etc.). ⠀
⠀
Candidates need party support to make it onto the ballot, but party officials doubt certain women candidates more than others. Women of color get less party support than white women, but women of color still out-win their white women counterparts. Of the small numbers of Democratic women of color who ran for the House in 2018, 37% were winners (compare that to 24% of white women). Not a single House Republican woman of color ran for office, so we couldn’t compute their win rates 🤷🏽⠀
⠀
Women’s political success extends past their higher rates of winning elections. Women co-sponsor and sponsor more bills than men, and the bills they write or support are more likely to be passed into law. Districts tend to receive more money when they are represented by a woman, no matter if she’s a Republican or Democrat. There are also racial differences in the way women govern that you should know about: women of color tend to be more collaborative and open to compromising with other lawmakers than white legislators.⠀
⠀
Even with all that winning and legislative efficiency, the number of women in government (and we’re talking all levels of government) isn’t even close to representing the actual numbers of women in the US population. Men of color are vastly underrepresented, too. In short, we have a lot of work to do.
