My experience here with the kangaroos brought mixed feelings. I’ve seen a lot of kangaroos through my life in Australia and it never gets old. And while it's so cute to see them, and even get close to them, some of the tourists here were repeatedly grabbing and touching the kangaroos for photos, which was distressing to see. Especially when you think that this could be happening to them every day. In some ways they don’t seem phased, almost used to it, but if you watch closer there were moments they would get agitated trying to find a path to move away from the crowd that hovered all around them.  My children watched in disbelief, choosing to stay completely away in protest, out of respect for the kangaroos. If you find some patience and allow them to move freely they will come and investigate you, generally searching for food. It's absolutely vital for the sake of their health and wellbeing you do not ever feed them. Luckily we didn't see any of this happening while we were there.  Today is also #WorldKangarooDay and I’d like to share my gratitude to those who care for our precious kangaroos, especially after the horrific bushfires we had this year.  What many people may not know is that kangaroos are the most slaughtered terrestrial wildlife species in the world 😢   There is a perception in Australia that kangaroos are a pest, populations are too high and they are overgrazing the land. The big issue is they are competing for resources with cows raised and slaughtered for the beef industry. An industry that is resource intensive and one of the most destructive for our environment and biodiversity. With threats to current farming practices and land management, kangaroo populations are controlled with government sanctioned cullings. These occur at night and according to the RSPCA large numbers are being shot inhumanely with some joeys left to die without their mothers.
