While this facility is usually used as a graveyard for retired airplanes, Volkswagen leased enough land here to park 21,000 returned vehicles following its emissions scandal in 2015. More than 350,000 of the 500,000 cars involved in the scandal were returned after Volkswagen admitted they were designed to only turn on emissions controls during testing, not during normal operation. As a result, they emitted up to 40 times more nitrous oxide (one of the most potent greenhouse gases) into the air than regulations allowed. The second picture shows what this land looked like in 2016 before returned vehicles flowed in.
