The legendary photojournalist Robert Capa was born on this day in 1913. A native of Budapest, Capa began freelancing for LIFE in his early 20s, later becoming a staff photographer and arguably our greatest war correspondent. He left in 1947 to co-found the iconic Magnum Photos.
Capa tragically died at the age of 40 when, on assignment for LIFE to cover the First Indochina War, he stepped on a landmine. LIFE mourned his passing in an obituary, quoting a cable they received from Ernest Hemingway: he “was a great and very brave photographer… He was so much alive that it is a hard long day to think of him as dead.”
