A family of Mongolian cowboys I photographed during the annual spring roundup near Shangdu, the ancient site of Xanadu, Kublai Khan’s summer palace immortalized by a a Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem. They wield looped bamboo poles (urga )to lasso the horses and bring them to the ground by their tails for inoculation and branding, the same tools and techniques used by their ancestors centuries ago. They are descendants of the marauding Mongolian nomads the Great Wall was built to keep out. In 1279 , Mongols under Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan, established the Yuan Dynasty and conquered all of China. #innermongolia #mongol #mongolia #mongolian #mongolianhorse
