Artist Donald Rodney’s sketchbooks provide a fascinating insight into his art and ideas but also into what he was thinking and feeling. Rodney was a leading figure in Britain’s BLK Art Group of the 1980s and his work drew on images from the mass media, art, and popular culture to explore issues of racial identity and racism.
In this sketchbook, a postcard of Ford Madox Brown's ‘The Last of England’ 1855 sits opposite Rodney's own sketch entitled ‘Last of England, First of England’ 1983. Underneath the sketch Rodney has written:
'First of England

on the wet and lonely deck
of the sailing ship the Empire
Windrush'
Rodney's sketch is on free display at Tate Britain, as part of a new exhibition marking Tate Archive’s 50th anniversary, with a journey through British art from 1600 to the 2000s. From sketchbooks and drawings to unpublished photographs and letters, the display presents a series of treasures from the world’s largest archive of British art.
