Last October, Richard Silliboy, co-chief of the Aroostook Band of Micmacs, led a sunrise ceremony on Alumni Walk for Maine’s first official observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The ancient ceremony is the “beginning of light and the Creator coming to us to make sure that life and nature continue,” he said.
