On Monday, it became clear that not even contracting coronavirus himself is going to make Donald Trump take the pandemic seriously or express a shred of compassion for the Americans who have died from it on his watch. Before leaving Walter Reed Medical Center, Trump demonstrated his heartlessness and his inability to heed science on Twitter. “Don’t be afraid of Covid,” he said. “Don’t let it dominate your life.”
An incredibly poignant response came from @AmandaKloots, the widow of actor Nick Cordero, who died from coronavirus in July at age 41. “Unfortunately it did dominate our lives didn’t it? It dominated Nick’s family’s lives and my family’s lives. I guess we ‘let it’—like it was our choice?” Kloots wrote on Instagram. “Unfortunately not everyone is lucky enough to spend two days in the hospital. I cried next to my husband for 95 days watching what COVID did to the person I love. It IS something to be afraid of. After you see the person you love the most die from this disease you would never say what this tweet says. There is no empathy to all the lives lost. He is bragging instead. It is sad. It is hurtful. It is disgraceful.”
The president may be one of the lucky ones, but his tweet was an insult to so many who were not. Craig Spencer, a New York City ER doctor, tweeted a powerful response at the president:“Your lack of empathy is the single greatest threat to the American people. You have failed us.” Tap the link in our bio to read more.
