Photo by @Joel Sartore / Over the course of this year, a record amount of the world’s largest tropical wetland has been lost to fire sweeping across Brazil. Often set to create short-lived fields for agriculture, these enormous fires have been fueled by dry conditions in recent weeks, threatening an untold number of animals, including the lowland tapir. Known as the gardeners of the forest, tapirs are excellent seed dispersers and essential for shaping and maintaining the biodiversity of the habitats in which they are found. @incab_brasil has been working to protect this species since 1996 through research, environmental education, outreach, capacity building, and the development and implementation of conservation strategies for tapirs and their habitats. Follow me @Joel Sartore to learn how you can support efforts to save this, and other incredible species in Brazil. Photo taken @johnballzoogr. #PhotoArk #savetogether
