Home to some eight million people, the region was captured here by satellite at a low angle from 800 miles away over the Pacific Ocean. When freshwater from inland California mixes with salty water coming from the ocean, it creates brackish wetlands that provide a vibrant habitat for wildlife, including many species of birds.
