Irma Stern’s ‘The Yellow Shawl’ is a tender portrait of a beautiful Cape Malay woman, her face framed by a honey-coloured scarf. Painted in 1939, it was described by critics as a ‘Madonna-like beauty’ and represents the artist’s sensitive portrayal of the diversity of the women of South Africa.💫
