クリスティーズさんのインスタグラム写真 - (クリスティーズInstagram)「In celebration of Classic Week New York, German artist Volker Hermes has masterfully modified a selection of paintings and sculpture from our Classic Week auctions, to shift the viewer's focus away from the face and toward surrounding influences.⠀ .⠀ Specialist Jonquil O'Reilly interviewed Hermes on his artistic approach and how his series, Hidden Portraits, reinterprets historical paintings through a modern lens; in this case, the investigation of expression when the face is obscured.⠀ .⠀ Noting that Hermes’ works took on a new significance in the age of the coronavirus pandemic, O'Reilly asked the artist's intention in obscuring the sitters' faces.⠀ .⠀ 'We've all just been made painfully aware of the fundamental importance of seeing the face of the person in front of us,' explains Hermes. 'I read recently that when you meet someone new it takes something like 7 seconds to determine if you like them. And that's not from their feet or hands. Everything is about the face. When we look at portraits in museums...what remains is access through facial expressions'.⠀ ⠀ He continues: 'With my Hidden Portraits series, I block this 'facial access' and shift the focus. If I invent new headpieces, enlarge wigs, make the individuality disappear behind opulent surfaces, then I force the viewer to re-engage with a portrait; to look at it anew. Sometimes with masks too.
