Photo by @amivitale / Wildlife keeper Lekupania offers a treat to an orphaned reticulated giraffe at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e), where it will be rehabilitated and returned to the wild. Giraffe populations have dropped nearly 40 percent in three decades, and reticulated giraffe number fewer than 16,000. The decline is thought to be caused by habitat loss and fragmentation as well as poaching, but with the lack of long-term conservation efforts in the past, it's hard to know exactly. Scientists are now undertaking major studies to understand why giraffes are disappearing and what can be done to stop it.
