For three decades, Crewdson’s photographs of houses, landscapes, and people have become canonical representations of the liminal and forgotten in America. Crewdson orchestrates every detail of his scenes, from casting the landscape’s light and color to devising the words on a street sign. Crewdson’s new series, “An Eclipse of Moths,” is titled for the phenomenon of moths’ innate navigational system drawn off course, disoriented instead towards artificial lights. In these pictures, Crewdson’s figures appear between two places, caught somewhere out of time, isolated and unsettled with a premonition of both perilousness and hope. “An Eclipse of Moths” is now on view at Gagosian, Beverly Hills.
