“With stand-up, you write the jokes, and then you get onstage to perform, and you can feel people’s energy letting you know what’s good and what’s not,” Sydnee Washington (@justsydbw) told BAZAAR. “When you’re on Instagram, you have no idea. You just see these comments and you see how many people are watching. You’re not really getting the real context.” Before the pandemic, Washington was a staple of New York City’s bustling live comedy circuit. The self-proclaimed Naomi Campbell of comedy, she was one of a growing bracket of Black women making a name for themselves in stand-up. But once quarantine orders dropped, she found herself, like so many New Yorkers, stuck at home with no in-person work for the foreseeable future. That’s where Sydnee Washington’s hit Instagram Live show—somewhat unconvincingly titled Syd Can Cook—comes in. At the link in our bio, read more about how she’s channeled her professional and private anxieties into culinary comedy and stay tuned for more from our Comedy Queens of Quarantine series.⁣
