Bacchus was the Roman god of wine, among other things 🍷
This intricately carved conch shell was made in Naples, Italy, in the 19th century and shows the god sitting in a finely decorated chariot drawn by two mythical beasts. Swipe to see the detail 👉
Bacchus is surrounded by musicians playing horns, tambourines and cymbals, and – as the god of wine – he holds a bunch of grapes 🍇
We’re working hard to reopen all of our galleries safely, but in the meantime you can explore the First floor of the Museum on Google Street View – including Room 47 which you can drop into via the link in our bio.
Can you spot this object on display? 👀
