Although my grandmother Essie Mae Jones (pictured above) who lived in Prattville, Alabama was not directly associated with Gee’s Bend Quiltermakers, she was an avid quilter. When she visited us in Detroit, she carried all of her multi-colored, patterned rectangles and diamonds ready to be hand-stitched into beautiful works of art. I always loved sitting with her, watching her hands join these small bits of textiles into intricate patterns. As each of her grandchildren prepared for college, my grandmother lovingly crafted a unique quilt in our favorite colors and tones to carry with us as we ventured out into the world.
