Fall marks the beginning of Corn Maze season in New Jersey. Corn mazes have become popular tourist attractions in America, helping farmers generate extra income. The corn is planted following elaborate plans to create a giant immersive 3-D puzzle. This one in Chester, NJ features a 10-acre maze with paths edged by eight-foot tall cornstalks, along with several bridges and misleading lanes guaranteed to get you lost. It can take up to 3 hours to successfully negotiate. If you get hopelessly lost, there are Maze Masters you can call to help you find your way. The maze’s theme changes each year; this year it’s (appropriately, given the wild climate changes we’ve seen) Amazed by Weather. I photographed this maze from a drone, a newly learned skill thanks to the Covid-19 shutdown. Fascinating humans for thousands of years, mazes and labyrinths can be made of corn, hedges, wood or mirrors, and evolved from spiritual symbols to amusing pastimes, primarily for the wealthy. The current record holder for largest permanent maze is the one in Yancheng, China, with a path almost six miles long. The toughest maze is considered the Villa Pisano Labyrinth, near Venice, Italy. #cornmaze #maze #cornrows #yamashitaphoto #fall #chesternj #ilovechesternj
