The Eiger can be pretty like the climbing in Rätikon but within a very short time it can change and then you experience how serious the North face can really be! This happened to us two days ago. After a really early start we had already a real fight to get over a very wet part of the wall. ! In total there were 4 pitches wet from 6c+ to 7c. Climbing a wet 7c feels super hard and insecure. It took us some time, luck and lots of motivation to reach the Czech bivi 2, but we made it perfectly in time. In the upper part of the wall we had perfect conditions and we were pretty fast and got over the last crux pitch at 6 p.m. The weather still looked good at this point. There where 4 more easy pitches to go before we would reach the top within 24h. (At this point we were 16 hours on the go, I had no fall and the psych was high) We had more than enough time left, we thought. Two pitches later a big storm hit us. It started to hail and rain cats and dogs, as I was in the middle of the second last pitch. I got soaking wet—no possible way to reach the next belay and no chance to climb down. (No fixed protection on this pitch) I had to improvise and found a good solution to get back to Jacopo. In this situation we perfectly worked together as a team thanks to all the adventures we experienced together. The temperatures dropped to freezing cold and the water turned into ice. We rappelled 31 pitches in a waterfall. When we reached the bivi and our warm sleeping bags (at 10p.m.) we couldn‘t be any happier!! That was better than any top or any success or summit. Glad we made it back, doesn‘t matter the fact that we had to bail at the second last pitch. (On the easy flat part on the very top) sometimes those pitches can turn into the most intimidating!! We always learn from the experience in the mountains! We made a mistake and got in trouble.
