Butterflies get all the hype for their vibrant colors, but let’s not forget about moths! At first, the Madagascan sunset moth (Chrysiridia rhipheus) was mistaken for a butterfly because it looked like a swallowtail butterfly. This moth gets its stunning iridescence not from pigment but from the way light reflects off the clear, curved scales on its wings. As you may suspect, the bright coloring also warns predators of its toxicity, which it obtains from the Omphalea plant as a caterpillar. Something else that sets this moth apart from other moth species—it flies during the day, rather than the night.
