"We have so much on our minds these days it's hard to think beyond what's right in front of us. Sometimes it's hard to keep track of the date, and Sept. 11 is just another day in an ongoing series of crises—except for those for whom it will always be a time of remembrance," writes TIME contract photographer James Nachtwey. "I was there on 9/11, and only by what I still consider to be a miraculous set of circumstances I managed to survive. Every day since then has been like living on borrowed time. My life has moved forward, but I have never gotten over what happened that day. I want to offer my respects to those who perished and to their loved ones left behind, and pay tribute to the firemen, police officers and first responders who gave their lives trying to save others. The 9/11 Memorial Museum's Tribute in Light has a transcendent, otherworldly effect. It is projected upwards towards the heavens, but it also appears to be shining down from above."
