19 years ago, my roommate woke me up and said to look out my window. I was 22 and had just graduated NYU and was starting a graduate program at Parsons. NYC has been my home since 1997, a place I had longed to live and was finally making my dreams come true. That morning, I woke up to a nightmare. I watched endless fire trucks race past my apartment, hundreds of people covered in dust walk past my building. I saw the towers come down and remember screaming in silence. It was heart breaking and I still can feel that sadness like no time has passed. Nyc felt immediately different from that day forward. The days and weeks after September 11 were eerie, strange, uncertain but in ways solidified my love with NY. I felt connected to my neighbors and community more than ever. People actually started making eye contact, smiling and saying hi to each other as you walked past as if we lived in a small town. 2020 while different than 9/11 has given me flashbacks to the emotions I felt in 2001. I’m in awe of NYC and always will be. I experienced one of the most horrific things in my life and then experienced it all come back. Life and the buzz of the city came back. While things are definitely not normal now in NYC and beyond, I believe we will all get through this and am
hopeful that we will come together like we did 19 years ago. 📷 taken 2 years ago on a field trip to One World Trade with my daughters class. #neverforget
