This reveals the distance between what is needed & what is conceded. To end anti-trans violence we require the complete recalibration of the gender system. Instead, we are offered “acknowledgment,” a perfunctory gesture meant to make cis people feel less guilty.

It’s not just about accepting that trans people exist, it’s about interrogating gender. Recognizing how every gender is far more complex than any norm captures.

Gender reveals are based on the fictitious assumption that genitals determine gender AND that the only options for gender are “boy” or “girl.” There are boys with vaginas & girls with penises & there are many people who are neither boys nor girls. This is not political correctness, it’s just...correct. We condemn gender reveals not because of our identity, but because of reality.

The gender binary prevents people from observing reality. Instead, it offers culturally & historically contingent stereotypes (pink used to be considered a masculine color) as personhood. People are taught to experience themselves & one another as ideas of how they should be, not the reality of what they are and what is. The gender binary requires that we adopt prescriptive ideas of gender (what men and woman should be) as descriptive ideas of gender (what men and women are).

Gender reveals require not just the invalidation of transness, but the impossibility of transness. Cisness is positioned as the default/prototype and everyone else is understood as derivative of it. The idea goes: while we might “identify” as trans now, we were “originally” “born” cis & we later “became” trans. When in truth, everyone is just born. And we all become after the fact.

The irony is we are accused of advancing a “gender ideology,” when in fact we are trying to escape it. The real ideology at play here is a system which romanticizes the collapse of the profound individuality to the callous monotony of category.”
