“If they start shooting when I'm returning back from school, I immediately call my mother to come,” says 16-year-old Aliona in eastern Ukraine. “We have no lessons specifically dedicated to how to behave during the shelling. But everyone already knows.” Aliona has been studying at a local newspaper office since her school was burnt down during shelling. “I like this school, although it is very upsetting that our old school was never renovated." Attacks on schools are attacks on children’s right to an education. Today on International Day to Protect Education from Attack, UNICEF is calling on governments to sign the Safe School Declaration, a commitment to protect every child’s right to an education during armed conflict. @unicef_ukraine
