In Ancient Greece they were identified with Dionysus, Artemis, Cybele and Phoebus because they drew the chariots for these mythical gods and goddesses. The symbolic representation revolved around protection. They guarded homes, doorways, palaces and thrones as well as shrines protecting the dead. I can go on and on as to what makes lions so culturally significant, but what boggles my mind is, if humans have revered lions for thousands upon thousands of years and still do, then why do we now, in a time when we are meant to be intellectually more superior to our ancestors and more empathetic towards animals, treat lions with such disregard and such disrespect; as mere commodities that can bred, petted, walked with and then thrown away like used oil rags to be shot for their heads and cut up for their bones to be sent off to SE Asia to be used in potions and lotions where they were never traditionally used in the first place! It truly beggars belief.」9月8日 21時51分 - lionwhisperersa
