An airplane drops fire retardant on the Slink Fire near Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center, Bridgeport, Calif., Aug. 30.

The training center’s commanding officer credits its civilian firefighters with preventing the fire from sweeping through base housing.

“Because of their skills and understanding of the terrain they were able to isolate the fire from coming over the ridge on top of the Colville housing,” said Col. Daniel Wittnam.
