Photo by @andreabruce In Waitangi, New Zealand, Maori wardens Huhana Tukaki, Wiki Todd, and Maryann Vogt participate in the Waitangi Day celebration. Maori wardens are volunteers appointed by their community to provide support, security, and traffic and crowd control. They are central to Maori self-government, providing leadership and guidance. They were created under the Maori Community Development Act in 1962, which marked the beginning of what some call the Maori renaissance. During this time the Maori went from being considered a “dying race” to reviving their political and cultural status in the country. In the beginning, wardens were key in battling alcoholism within their Iwis (tribes), which was often considered a tool of colonialism.

In the June 2020 issue, take a look "Taking the Lead," a story that I photographed about the inspiring women of Bolivia, New Zealand, Iraq, and Afghanistan who have made huge gains in achieving political power, but still face cultural resistance, and even violence, as their influence increases. Story by Rania Abouzeid. Follow me @andreabruce for more photos and stories.
