Our nearest galactic neighbor has a halo. 😇
This illustration shows how it would appear, if it were visible to human eyes: the biggest feature in the nighttime sky.
Using our @NASAHubble Space Telescope, scientists have mapped the nearly invisible halo of diffuse plasma around the Andromeda Galaxy, extending for 1.3 million light-years, or halfway to our Milky Way. In some directions, the halo extends for 2 million light-years and is already bumping into the halo of our own galaxy. Contained within is fuel for future star formation as well as clues to the galaxy's past and future evolution.
