A pair of badgers - There is an unwritten rule in badger society, a rule so sacred that is had been penned into the ancient texts of Mustelidae. The rule is that, when badgers are out in pairs they must never, under any circumstance, lift their heads at the same time! For fifteen years I have watched frustrated as this rule remained unbroken, adhered to religiously, on pain of excommunication from the sett, until this day that is. To be fair though this is a bit of a half-arsed breaking of the sacred rule, the badger at left could probably plead his case that his snoot has remained within the certified six inches of the ground but it was still shocking for me to see. It’s no less of a miracle that I was able to squeeze out a single measly frame before said rule-breaking badger at left realised his terrible error and quickly jammed his snoot back into the grass where it belongs. In doing so he thereby correctly rendered all subsequent images fundamentally flawed, unusable, a complete waste of my bloody time! Once normalcy has returned to badger society that evening I could then return to my familiar feeling of watching and marvelling at how only one head would ever rise at a time, no matter how perfect the situation, no matter how stunning the light, the two badgers were stoic in their determination that only one head could ever be raised. Of course this rule, like all religious doctrines, does have applicable caveats, such as, as long as the badgers are far enough apart to not fit neatly into a single frame then it is fine. Also if the attendant photographer has started packing all of his gear away, or has been momentarily distracted by his phone then these are both absolutely forgivable, even encouraged. Except of course for when the photographer is alert, fully focussed and ready with anticipation then no, under no circumstances should those bloody wet nosed, monochromatic worm botherers dare to look up properly together once in over 15 years! 😊
