Today,
the film “21st Century Girl” #이십일세기소녀 has been released in South Korea.
The purpose of this film is to encourage as many girls as possible to think, “I want to make a movie”.

According to a 2019 survey by the Asahi Newspaper, over the past twenty years, 97% of commercial films are directed by men, and only 3% by women.
In my lifetime, I would like to see these numbers equalized, and return women’s self-portraits back into their own hands.

When I was conceiving this project, I was still in my twenties and a rookie director. I’m okay with trial and error, and I hoped for a path to revolution to come soon - not in some far-off future.

Last year, this film was selected for the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, of which I have vivid memories from attending. That Korean audiences accepted this movie with their own awareness about contemporary issues warmed my heart.

Normally, I am electrified by Korean film.
I am proud to see this film reach Korea’s brilliant audiences.

May flames of passion drive the dreams of as many girls as possible.
The only person who can conceive of your self-portrait, is you.
I hope for respect of the girls of the past, inspiration for the girls of the present, and stimulation to the girls of the future.
