Believe it or not there are many similarities between working with wild animals and flying aeroplanes. For one, not every person who learns to fly is going to develop, or have the skills to perform aerobatics or even fly professionally, just as not everyone who befriends a wild animal is guaranteed the ability to work with that animal on an ongoing basis. An aeroplane can be safe in the hands of someone who is experienced, skilled and competent, but is an extremely dangerous weapon in the hands of someone who is not. The same goes for a wild animal. Disrespect an aeroplane and it’ll eventually bite you. Misjudge or misread a wild animal, and it’ll do the same. Fly an aeroplane when the conditions are not right, or try make a landing beyond your skills set - the likelihood is that you are looking for trouble and will find it. Interact with an animal when it’s not in the mood, or engage it in a way beyond your experience, and the chances are, you’ll land yourself in hot water. Over 100 deaths are reported each year due to horse-riding related injuries. 80,000 hospitalizations occur in the USA alone. The majority of the riders report that the injury was preventable and due to handling error. Mistakes are made by experienced riders, they happen more easily for unexperienced riders, Everything we do in life is fraught with risk. No one was ever promised a “safe” life, despite the fact that we are living in the safest times ever as a bipedal species. We all have some tolerance for risk considering that we willingly climb into cars and other motor vehicle transport daily. Each person has their own line in the sand when it comes to risk, and negotiates their lives accordingly. #foodforthought #sorryforthelongpost
