In fact, they were so desperate for help that the most high profile people they could find to deliver the ‘Declaration of Rebellion’ to Downing street was... us.🤪 I’ll never forget that day. It was cold and grey and we stood outside reading the declaration to an audience of five people. It felt underwhelming to say the least… Little did we know that @extinctionrebellion would soon become an extraordinary social movement, pushing the UK government to make history in declaring ‘A Climate and Ecological emergency’. Since then XR have carried out multiple actions bringing London to a stand-still and inspiring splinter groups in over 75 countries across the world. Of course, that’s not to say the movement is perfect. As with any decentralised movement, it has suffered at the hands a few individuals misjudged and misguided actions, and has consistently been criticised for it’s focus on arrest and its failing to include black and minority voices. These criticisms need to be taken seriously, and there is a lot of work to be done. As the COVID-19 pandemic has swept across the world, the movement faces perhaps its greatest challenge yet. Understandably climate change has taken a back seat in current affairs and mass gatherings feel like a thing of the past. At the same time, it has never been more important to come together in protest against the broken system that has led us to this point. With that in mind tomorrow Extinction Rebellion prepares to take to the streets again, this time to pressure Government to back a new Climate and Ecological Bill. Climate change, COVID-19 and racial injustice are all symptoms of a toxic system that is driving us to extinction. We will be marching in to highlight the intersection of these global crises.
