On buses, trains, cars, trucks, airplanes and on foot, people traveled from every state for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. The city had never seen a demonstration of this magnitude.
An estimated 250,000 people participated in the march. They carried signs, sang along with civil rights anthems, waded in the Reflecting Pool and listened to the speeches.
Mostly, they came to bear witness, for themselves and their communities, that they would not stand idly by when the rights of so many Americans were being denied.
This pin was donated to our @国立アメリカ歴史博物館 by Virginia Beets. Visit our @nmaahc's feed for more posts this week that commemorate the #MarchOnWashington and those who fought for jobs, justice and equality. #APeoplesJourney #ANationsStory
