I couldn’t believe that the places I needed to visit to wash my clothes were, in fact, dingy and unkempt. A couple years later, I began dreaming up my ideal laundromat, and convinced my sister Theresa to move from London to help with the design. We envisioned a beautiful, modern, light-filled space that was not only sparkling clean but also environmentally friendly (a value our mother instilled in us from a young age). We found the perfect space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, installed the most energy-efficient equipment on the market, sourced biodegradable garment care products, and brought our vision to life. Theresa ended up staying in New York after the buildout (as did our parents), and for two years our family business was a lovely spot for the community to do laundry, linger in our back patio, and relax with a cup of coffee in our mezzanine café. As small business owners, we wear many hats, including helping our team wash and fold. We’re no strangers to being on our feet for hours on end, and having supportive footwear is key. When COVID-19 hit New York in March this year, we decided it was best for our team to shelter at home while my sister and I kept the business going. The neighborhood needed our services to stay healthy and clean (it’s still relatively uncommon to have laundry in the building in NYC), and we ended up doing thousands of pounds of laundry drop-offs between the two of us while self-service was suspended.
