It's often written as IIII instead of IV. It's not a typo; this is called the "Watchmaker's Four." ⁠ ⁠ One of the known instances of the Watchmaker's (or clockmaker's) Four is a clock in the Wells Cathedral in England, built at the end of the 14th Century. There are a few theories as to why the Watchmaker's Four was started. Charles V, the King of France was said to have told a watchmaker to change IV to IIII because he believed IV to be bad luck, as it was subtracting one from V (his title was Charles V). ⁠ ⁠ Another theory is that IIII was used to express four until the 17th Century when it was changed to IV. The Watchmaker's Four could have also been used purely for aesthetics and readability. In Roman Numerals, four IV is easily confused with six VI. ⁠ ⁠ Whatever the reason behind it, we use the Watchmaker's Four on many of our watches to keep the tradition alive.
