NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he wished the league had "listened earlier" to Colin Kaepernick when he began protesting police brutality and racial injustice during the National Anthem back in 2016. Goodell said he now better understands the message and is frustrated that it was mischaracterized as unpatriotic. “What they were trying to do is exercise their right to bring attention to something that needs to get fixed. That misrepresentation of who they were and what they were doing was the thing that really gnawed at me," Goodell said Sunday.
