Photo by @ジョン・スタンメイヤー Women wait to weigh freshly plucked tea leaves picked at a plantation in West Bengal, India. Plucking of tea leaves is almost always done by women, working 8-10 hours, six days a week. Called pluckers, each earns roughly 172 rupees ($2.40) per day, or 3,000 rupees ($42) a month, with bonus payments during first blush of tea harvesting season. When sipping a cup of tea, give thanks to those who pluck the leaves…This photo is from my latest story in @ナショナルジオグラフィック magazine, "India: Water Everywhere, and Nowhere," in the August 2020 issue, now on newsstands worldwide.
