We say that “walls are meant for climbing” because we believe that walls should unite and connect us, not divide or exclude. Every climber can relate to one another through the shared experience of challenging and learning about themselves through the simple act of climbing. My path to making climbing my career occurred as a result of several of my own choices but luck and privilege played a major role in that process. My family had the means to afford a gym membership when I first started; they had the time to take me to the gym, to pay to travel to competitions, to support my training by hiring coaches, etc. These are luxuries that many cannot conceive of.
