The conflict in southern Somalia left her an orphan, and about four years ago, after the family’s goats died in the drought of 2016, her grandmother sold her to a man in their town. She was 12. It was two months before Natesha could escape across the border and to Dadaab in northern Kenya. When she arrived, she found out she was pregnant. Aid organizations, including the United Nations Children’s Fund, note that child marriages increase after droughts. Adapting to life in Dadaab, and motherhood, has been challenging for Nasteha, but being taken in by Halima Hassan Mohamed, a woman of about 50 who knew her when she was young, has at least provided a safe and loving home. “Now she’s my child…I protect her the best I can,” Halima told writer @aurora_alm.
