Growing up in Lima, Peru, Andrés Ruzo heard stories from his grandfather about a river, located deep in the Amazon, that is so hot it boils. After he became a geoscientist, he discovered this was no legend — he trekked into the remote rainforest and saw it for himself. Wider than a two-lane road and hot enough to cook anything that accidentally falls in, Shanay-timpishka flows hot for more than 6 kilometers, or close to 4 miles. Ruzo was absolutely confounded: What made this tributary reach average temperatures of 86°C (186.6° F)? For the next 3 years, he and his team searched for the answer. “In this age, where everything seems mapped, measured and studied, in this age of information, there remains so much to explore," he says in his TED Talk.
