Andy Sweet’s 1977 photographs from Camp Mountain Lake, in North Carolina, capture the intense realities of the American camp experience—its cheerful triumphs, its particular internal politics, and the gutting alienation one can experience within it. In the photos, teens decked in their best late-’70s finery—tube socks and tight jeans, bright swim trunks and T-shirts printed with pop-culture slogans or icons—preen for the camera like young peacocks. They have arrived in paradise, away from their families and among their peers, and they are ready to take on the new personae that this shift allows for.
