The blast in Beirut has rendered 300,000 people homeless. During a pandemic. That would be the equivalent of 14 million Americans losing their home in a single explosion. It has caused billions of dollars in damages. It has taken the lives of 157 people with another 400 missing and 5000 wounded. It has destroyed the port where 80% of Lebanon’s food import comes in. At a time when the Lebanese currency has lost 90% of its value since September and people have already had to reduce their food intake because prices have more than tripled. COVID 19 cases have also tripled in the last month. Overwhelmed hospitals are turning the injured away. And it’s individual citizens who are banding together to clean up the rubble and shattered glass and help the injured and homeless amid fumes of nitric acid as a corrupt, criminal government does nothing.
